The Black Cat: Walk #2 of 4

2013-08-18 edphyllis15.17.20

Above, Ed and Phyllis came to visit a few weekends ago! We had fun checking out garage sales and playing bocce ball. Oh yeah, I’m supposed to be writing about this morning’s walk!  Pretty dark this morning. I was walking along, enjoying the star-filled sky, when the light of my flashlight fell on a black cat walking about two feet from me, very close to the edge of the road. And then…I saw the white stripe! I didn’t know I could run that fast. 🙂 Luckily, it was a mellow skunk: I didn’t get sprayed. There were deer everywhere — six of them were moving along in the mist as I came up the hill, and three more by the pond. Have a great day!

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

hydrangea-08-10 14.47.48We have waited since 2007 for this hydrangea bush to bloom and it finally did!!! I have been walking four times a week, thanks to my neighbor, but I haven’t been blogging. It’s dark when when we leave at 5 a.m. now.  We’ve had some beautiful mornings where deer have crossed the road right in front of us, yet they were barely visible in the fog. This morning, with the luxury of sleeping til 7, I walked in daylight. There was a misty rain for cooling off in the humid, sticky air. I saw a doe stomping her foot at me before she bolted, and a bluebird. Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Walk #4 of 4: Victory!

bluebird0701131856It was 74 degrees this morning, a bit buggy, but my neighbor and I got out ahead of the heat! We walked four mornings in a row, and have regularly seen a deer or two and sometimes a fawn, at the end of our road. Since the temperature has hit 90 degrees and above every day this week, it’s great to have that little slice of cooler air in the morning. Above, I bought this scary-looking garden ornament to keep the birds from building a nest in our shed; instead, they had babies in our shed and they’re getting ready to lay some eggs here too! Have a great weekend!

Monday, Monday: Walk #1 of 4

Today it was 74 degrees when we walked and very buggy. We saw four beautiful deer and one bluebird. Stephanie brought her walking app along and it told us the route is 3.5 miles! All this time, I thought it was 3.7 miles! My little bubble is burst by reality. Ah well.

Walk 4 of 4: Happy Belated 4th of July!

2013-07-04 Happy 4th Mailbox15.01.08Thanks to Stephanie, we walked Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of this week. I took Friday off from work but, because my neighbor was still walking, I got up and out by 5 a.m. to join her! With the temps in the 90s during the day, this is a great way to beat the heat. I hope everyone had a great 4th of July. We celebrated by putting in our new mailbox. Stephanie’s husband John, helped Ken dig the hole with his post digger, and Ken did the rest. Have to go! Ken tells me the first letter has arrived in our new mailbox! 🙂

Mosquitoes Ate Us for Breakfast: Walk #1 of 4

gnome0701131857Just standing outside for a minute waiting for my neighbor Stephanie this morning, I was bitten by so many mosquitoes I put a raincoat on and put the hood up. We were glad to get moving! It was 67 degrees at 5 a.m. On the bright side, it wasn’t rain! Above, I wedged our garden gnome into the roof rafters of our shed. He is hiding from our young neighbors next door, whose job it was to find him and hide him again. They did find him, but they also found that a bird has built its nest on top of him!

Bring A Raincoat, Just in Case: Walk #2 of 4

0roses609131323aI wish I had more time with Eric, Holly, and James last night, but it was great to see what a beautiful family Eric has and at least James had a good night’s sleep. I bailed on Stephanie this morning, so she walked the whole loop alone. Instead I walked tonight. One black cloud seemed to go ahead of me the whole time. The sky was a strange mix of black clouds, overcast, with spots of blue sky trailing. I saw three deer, six wild turkeys, three rabbits, and one bluebird!

We Did It! Walk #1 of 4

peasmms_picture.jpg257Today it was 73 degrees with 90 percent humidity when my neighbor Stephanie and I walked. So glad we got out. We saw three deer this morning. The horseflies ate us for breakfast, but we got through it. I came home and grabbed a couple of sugar snap peas right off the vine. Delicious!

It’s Not Raining! Walk #3 of 4

2013-06-09 hatching14.53.32I’ve bailed out on the mornings this week, walking just once in the a.m., but twice in the evening. Last night I walked with my neighbor Stephanie. It was perfectly sunny and 72 degrees, which felt awesome after all the rain we’ve had. Here are photos Ken took of the baby robins hatching in our shed.

Hurry! Walk Before It Rains Again! Walk #2 of 4

peasmms_picture.jpg257This is my second walk of the week. It was 72 degrees and sunny! I waited until after work: I didn’t want to miss this one, as there is more rain predicted for the next two days.     There is a mother and four baby robins nesting in our shed, so no parties in there until they move out! Our snap peas are doing well. Ken and I tasted the first ones. Sweet!
